Thousands of years back, ancient civilizations like the Mayans and the Greek used chewing gums as a part of their daily life. Today, most of us love our chewing gums and chew them for a few hours a day. It is considered as a harmless habit by most of us. Does the act of chewing gums come with any benefits of it own?

As I am allergic to pollen, I hate those days when I am sneezing all through the day. In those times, my chewing gum has been a big relief for me. I never sneeze while chewing a gum. And my chewing gum is a dear friend of mine in those days! I don’ know the exact reason for this. For the most part, while chewing a gum, I am brething through my mouth. As sneezing is caused due to the discomfort in nasal cavity, the change in breathing route can reduce the discomfort level in your nose and possibly relieve the allergy symptoms.

On many an occasion, I find myself skipping snacks while chewing a gum. As snacks are high calory and my sugar free chewing gum is low calory, this is a help for me to maintain my weight at a lower level. As I am staying occupied at chewing my gum, I feel less hungry too. Even after spitting my gum out, I won’t feel the same level of appetite as otherwise.

Whenever I feel sleepy during a long drive, I start chewing a piece of gum and the result is noticeable in a very short time. While chewing a gum, the chances of you falling asleep at your steering wheel is negligible or nonexistent.

Chewing gums can act as a big relief in tough situations. Its ability to reduce the tension prevailing in a situation is shown through the use of chewing gums by soldiers and international athletes to relieve their stress levels.

Chewing gum is an useful tool in hiding your true feelings. This is especially true in a competitive game like a football match. Your opponent will find it really hard to read your mind.

While travelling in a plane, the pressure difference can cause problems fo many people. This is especially a problem during take off and landing. Some people experience pain in their ears due to this. Chewing on a piece of gum can significantly reduce this condition. The same is true about travelling to high altitude places too. There are cases where people who throw up during travel being able to survive the journey without this problem, while chewing a piece of gum.

It is an effective tool in cleaning your teeth. If you are in a situation without the ability to wash your teeth after a meal, chewing on a piece of gum can provide quite a lot of relief from potential teeth problems. Chewing a piece of gum can provide some exercise to your jaws as well. One way to gain the strength of your jaws after jaw surgery is to chew on gums.

People trying to quit smoking are known to use chewing gum as a tool to keep their mind of the craving for the next cigarette.
